AROUND 270,000 new businesses open up every year in the UK, according to the Department of Business Innovation & Skills. But will they all stand out from the rest, or will some put their marketing and PR aside till they’ve grown their businesses through sales and word of mouth? Some of these 270,000 will concentrate purely on sales in the first couple of years before planning their marketing and PR strategy. Harpers Wine & Spirit Design Awards – and the winners are….

I WAS delighted to be a judge at this year’s Harpers Wine &  Spirit Design Awards for wine labels – and what worthy winners. Matching each design brief to its final label design gave us a great insight to how effectively a design agency team has listened to its client. Copywriters also need a special mention as part of the process. The winning labels had some effective back label text but other great label designs were let down by poorly written copy. Sometimes you couldn’t even read the text, some back labels had too much detail while others didn’t name the grape varieties used. Facebook help is at hand for wine producers

THE latest in smart technology continues with Quick Response codes – they look like square-shaped barcodes and take a mobile phone user straight through to a winery’s website and tasting notes. US retailers use them on shelf-talkers, posters and promotional material. The QR craze is also catching on in Italy where social media-friendly wine producer Il Palazzone has put the code on its 2006 Brunello label, plus its Twitter username @ilpalazzone on the front label. The producer has reported a lift in sales since introducing QR Codes on its bottles.
