IN THE early 18th century, a local entrepreneur built two Regency villas alongside the ruins of Hereford Castle. Little did this Hereford gentleman know that his magnificent home would benefit so many people for centuries to come. Today, this ancient building is home to the exquisite Castle House Hotel, Hereford city’s only boutique hotel. Castle House offers resplendent views of Hereford Cathedral and its beautiful garden has the old castle moat running through it. Castle House is family-owned and run by the Watkins family whose produce from their kitchen gardens and farm at Ballingham Hall are used in the wonderful cuisine found here. Monmouthshire gets ready for its Food Festival at Caldicot Castle (June 4th-5th)

IF BUYING LOCAL is important to you then food doesn’t get more local than at Monmouthshire Food Festival, which takes place from Saturday 4th June to Sunday 5th June at Caldicot Castle. Head to the Producers Market where you can buy a beer that’s been brewed just 1.5 miles away. MORE THAN 50 different ciders and sausages will be tempting the tastebuds of festival-goers this Bank Holiday at Hereford’s very own Sausage & Cider Festival. A line-up of great music, live bands and children’s entertainment can be enjoyed throughout the three-day event, organised by Sam Mitcham. The DJ, music producer and events promoter has returned to live in Hereford after 10 years living between Ibiza and the north of England. There will be a line-up of great ciders from Herefordshire and surrounding counties, including Snails Bank, Abrahalls, Gwatkins Cider, Golden Valley and Farmer Fear, as well as strawberry, raspberry, rum cask and Rioja cask. AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST Winemaker, Louisa Rose of Yalumba, says she would be fascinated to make wine in England – and the British weather would not bother her. Louisa visited the UK from the Barossa in South Australia to host two weeks of pop-up supper clubs, working with British chefs to match regional food produce with her award-winning wines. The one-off events took place in cities including London, Bristol and Chester. Food & drink producers welcome new food festival at Lucton School in Herefordshire

THE FIRST food event of 2015 in The Marches is also a first for Lucton School, which hopes its brand new food fest will become an annual event. The Lucton Food Festival takes place on Saturday March 14th and will be an indoor show featuring over 30 food and drink exhibitors from three counties. Products will range from pickles, chutneys and organic honey, handmade chocolates, fresh organic and smoked meats, to delicious breads, pastries and freshly shaken juices. Festival-goers will be treated to a day of sampling, demonstrations and workshops at the prestigious school. Lucton was founded in 1708 by John Pierrepont who was himself involved in the London drinks trade as a vintner. Big Apple’s Harvestime Festival celebrates great cider-making in Herefordshire

FARMS, cider mills and cottages in the pretty Marcle Ridge area of Herefordshire are gearing up for this weekend’s Harvestime Festival as part of the annual Big Apple celebrations. Visitors to the festival will be able to taste and buy a great range of apple juice, cider and perry over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, 11th-12th October. This year there will be an array of events, walks and talks around venues in March Marcle, Little Marcle, Woolhope, Putley, Aylton, Munsley and Pixley.
